Hemp is a tried and tested fabric that is used heavily in many other industries. It has especially become popular when it comes to clothing and training gear given hemp is stronger than many of the other common fabrics like cotton. And there are actually many other benefits to hemp especially for BJJ gear such as Gis.
Whilst the growth in popularity of hemp has been going for a few years now, it’s relationship with BJJ is only in it’s infancy. There are not that many companies that specialize in producing products made of hemp but Submission Fight Company is one of them
So to further everyone’s understanding of hemp and BJJ, especially when it comes to Gis, we enlisted the help of Shakib Nassiri who owns Submission Fight Company. In this post and detailed interview, Shakib runs through the reasons why you should consider hemp when you buy your next Gi.
Hemp And BJJ
Tell us a little about you and your team, your training, etc.
My name is Shakib Nassiri, and I am the President of Submission Fight Co. Inc. I am currently a purple belt in bjj under Jean Jacques Machado in Tarzana, Ca. Also, a big part of our team is Chase Gould who has been working for Submission Fight Co. for almost a year now. He started mainly as an MMA fighter but after working here he also signed up at JJ Machado Academy and has been training there ever since. It is mainly us two running the show, but we do get help every now and then.
What made you decide to start your own fight wear company?
It was pretty random. I really didn’t think I’d end up with my own bjj gi brand. It was more like a, “let’s just try it and see what happens” day. Well hey I tried it and I saw the gi sales growing and growing and pretty soon I was onto something.
Tell us more about Submission Fight Company and what the mission and longer term goals are?
The mission at Submission Fight Co. is to produce bjj gear made of only organic materials, free of pesticides. Our longer term goals are to expand our market reach and show more of the world how great organic materials are, especially when used for bjj gis and other bjj gear. We really want to make Organic hemp gis more of the norm instead of these rough sandpaper like cotton gis.

Why did you decide to go the way of natural materials for some of your gis? What were the reasons you chose hemp and what should everyone know about it?
After a few months of starting the brand I realized to be successful I had to not only be better but to be different to succeed. That’s when I found a hole in the Jiu Jitsu market… There were no hemp gis! Hemp fiber is 4x softer and 4x stronger than cotton, it’s anti microbial, anti bacterial, breathable, light, etc. I mean there is just nothing more you can ask for from a Jiu Jitsu Gi. Hemp Gis are simply superior to a cotton gi in every way. So it was pretty easy for me to decide to produce hemp gis and become the leader in this niche before other brands start to copy this genius idea. But my goal is bigger than just dominating the hemp gi market, my goal is to create Jiu Jitsu gear using more unique organic materials and not only hemp. My ultimate goal is to become the leader in organic bjj gear using hemp and all sorts of other organic materials for our bjj gear! Natural organic materials are not only superior materials to use but are also very good for the environment.
We know you have a few gis made from hemp. Tell us more about the designs and how you went about making them.
Yes, we have the Hemp Sensation & the Women’s Hemp Ecstasy Gi that are made of hemp. We also have a black Hemp Sensation Gi coming out soon that is currently on Pre-Order status. As for the designs on these gis we wanted to keep things very simple. The Hemp Sensation Gis have green contrast stitching throughout with minimal brand embroideries. Most import thing to note is that we are not trying to sell our bjj gis as having the best designs, because we don’t. If you want cool designs there are many other brands out there with much nicer designs. However, if you want a superior gi to all others made of organic materials, then that is where we shine. We are selling bjj gis that are 4x stronger and 4x softer than any other cotton gi out there, this is our main focus, Not designs.

Are there plans to use other materials for gis and gear in the future?
Yes, although we lead the way with hemp gis, we don’t want to stop here. My main goal is to have Submission Fight Co. Not only be the leader in hemp gis but to be the leader in Organic bjj gear. This means I have many new products in the pipeline that will be made using other organic materials and not only hemp. The new materials used are top secret so I have to be quiet about it now. Email subscribers are usually the first to hear about our new product releases.
If yes, what makes these materials better than others for gear?
There are almost infinite reasons why organic materials are better than the normal cotton or polyester material that is used for all other bjj gear in the market. You can do a quick google search and you will find thousands of articles about this. To name some of the main benefits, organic materials are natural and very good for the environment. Organic bjj gear is many times softer and stronger than traditional materials used for gear. Organic bjj gear also gets cleaner with every wash, wicks away sweat, has spf protection from the sun, anti microbial, anti bacterial, breathable and of course eco friendly. If I started listing all the benefits of hemp and organic materials, I feel like I could write a book!
What other projects are you guys working on besides hemp Gi’s and what should we expect from you guys in the near future?
All our new releases will be products made from only organic materials. We have also released a few cool shirts made of 100% organic cotton, which makes even our shirts very soft and comfortable compared to all other cotton bjj shirts.
Here’s some new stuff were working on:
Hemp Aura pants: These will be hemp pants that are sold separately.
Twister Gi: This will be limited edition colored hemp gis.
Black Hemp Sensation: Finally giving color to the popular Hemp Sensation Gi, now releasing it in black color. This bjj gi is currently on Pre-Order status at Black Hemp Sensation
More organic bjj gear to come. Be first to hear about it by following us on our social networks, FB, twitter, Instagram, etc.
